The topic of this glossary is the land surveyor job. I did this glossary to help me with twenty words that I'm having difficulties with.
Acquiescence
Noun
Some act of concurrence by the adjoining owners bearing on the practical location of their
common boundary where the definite or more accurate position of the line or lines has not or cannot be defined by
survey.
Example: As a result of acquiescence, the person whose rights are infringed may lose the ability to make a legal claim against the infringer or may be unable to obtain an injunction against continued infringement.

Azimuth
Noun
The horizontal direction reckoned clockwise from the meridian plane.
Example: Graph 2 overleaf shows the yearly total array output for a similar design (20º slope, 30º azimuth) along with a range of other designs.

Blaze
Noun
A mark made upon a tree trunk usually at about breast height. The bark and a small amount of the live wood
are removed with an axe or other cutting tool, leaving a flat, smoothed surface that forever brands the tree. On
rough-barked tree monuments or bearing trees, the appropriate marks are scribed into a smooth, narrow, vertical
blaze the lower end of which is about 6 inches above the root crown.
Example: The blaze should be just long enough to allow the markings to be made. See OVERGROWTH.

Certiorari
Noun
A written instruction issued by a higher court to a lower court requiring the records of a trial be
submitted for review or inquiry.
Example: If such higher court finds no reason to re-examine the records based on arguments
submitted by attorneys, the ruling of the court is “Certiorari denied.”

Chaining
Verb
The operation of measuring a distance on the earth, using a chain or tape. The corresponding operation,
in private surveys, is taping.
Example: By extension, chainage (running distance) is the distance along a curved or straight survey line from a fixed commencing point, as given by an odometer.

Clinometer
Noun
A hand held instrument used to measure vertical angles or the inclination of a slope. Also called an
Abney Level.
Example: The measurements were taken by means of a compass - clinometer.

Conveyance
Noun
In real property law, a transfer of legal title to land. An instrument, such as a deed, by which
interest in real property is created or by which title to real property is transferred from grantor to grantee.
Example: Protective measures that might be taken before the conveyance is concluded.

Diurnal
Adjective
Daily. Usually used in reference to a natural phenomenon that occurs only once in a given day
Example: Hummingbirds are diurnal because they are most active in the day.

Easement
Noun
An interest or right in land owned by another that entitles its holder to a specific limited use; such as
laying a sewer, crossing over the property, or putting up power lines.
Example: Property ownership or possession is not impacted by an easement.

Ephemeris
Noun
Any tabular statement of the assigned places of a celestial body for regular intervals.
Example: The current Ephemeris of the Sun, Polaris and Other Selected Stars with Companion Data and Tables, which has been published
annually in advance since 1910 as a supplement to the various Manuals of Surveying Instructions, is available
through the U.S. Government Printing Office in Washington, D.C.

Estoppel
Noun
The stopping of a person from asserting a claim by reason of his own previous representations which
refute his new claim.
Example: The new claim may in fact be true, however, he may be prevented from exerting that claim by
“estoppel.

Extinguishment
Noun
To render legally nonexistent; to destroy or render void; to nullify; to void, as by payment,
treaty, setoff, or limitation of actions, the merger of an interest in a great one, etc.
Example: Extinguishment is distinguished from the mere transfer, passing, or suspension of a right or obligation.

Groin
Noun
A shore protective structure, narrow in width, usually built perpendicular to the shore for purposes of
trapping littoral drift or to protect the shore from erosion. Sometimes incorrectly called a dike.
Example: In a river, groins slow down the process of erosion and prevent ice-jamming, which in turn aids navigation.

Lode
Noun
A mineralized rock lying within boundaries clearly separating it from the neighboring rock and extending
longitudinally in a continuous zone or belt. In mining law, and in popular usage in the Western States, it is
synonymous with “ledge” and “vein.
Example: The tin oxide was very thinly scattered within the lode.

Marsh
Noun
An area of low-lying, wet ground subject to frequent or regular flooding or ordinarily covered with water.
Marsh vegetation is composed chiefly of reeds, grasses, and grasslike plants. In Cadastral Survey usage the word
“marsh” has usually been used to refer to coastal “salt marshes.”
Example: The marshes along the coast support a remarkable profusion of plants and animals.

Pescription
Noun
The manner of acquiring adverse rights in another’s land. Prescriptive rights are similar to
“adverse possession” but that term is used for title interest. “Prescription” refers to rights of use in land belonging
to another, such as the right of access, grazing rights, or the right to divert floodwaters.
Example: The surveyor must have a working knowledge of many complexing subjects like adverse possession and prescription.

Referenced
Verb
Bearings and distances from a monument to described or identified points to be used for future
corner point determination is said to be “referenced.”
Example: Some types of survey plans are subdivision plan, reference plan, posting plan, air space plan, or strata plan.

Scrip
Noun
A certificate that allows the owner to make a selection of a specified number of acres out of available public
lands.
Example: The holder of scrip, however, was restricted to selecting a homestead from the inventory of lands that had been properly surveyed and cadastered by a Dominion Lands Surveyor and were subsequently declared open for entry by a Dominion Lands office.

Theodolite
Noun
A precision surveying instrument for measuring horizontal and vertical angles. The graduated circles
are usually read by means of optical microscopes and are more precisely graduated than are the circles on a transit.
Example: Since few referees are equipped with theodolites, enforcing this rule has been hard.

Traverse
Verb
In surveying, a sequence of lengths and directions of lines between points on the earth, obtained by field
measurements and used to determine the positions of the points through the use of trigonometric computations.
Example: This article includes the definition of traverse surveying along with its classification, errors in traversing, checks, the completed method of traversing, and plotting of traverse survey.
